CHAPTER 11: THURSDAY, OCTOBER 30th

Beth was excited about us going to
college together, but still looked a
little skeptical, and I figured that
now was time to hit her full force with
her own psychology.
“Every day that you don’t become a
Veterinarian is another bad day for the
animals in the world. You know that,
and you also know how over worked Barry
is. He’s not young either. I’m sure he
wouldn’t mind having a full-fledged
partner to help him out.”
Beth actually thought about it.
That was a major win in my department,
and with that win in the bank, I went
on to explain my bank robber theory.
I thought I was being funny, but
Beth didn't, “What if that's what we're
really doing? We could go to prison for
that or die. I don't want us to do it,
if that's the case.”
“Don't worry, we won't,” I
promised. A promise, I intended to
keep.
“Besides, we’ll probably be too
busy trying to stay out of prison for
the Cat-napping, and besides that,
who’d believe me about the money or any
of this really?
“Oh, and by the way, a talking Cat
is behind all of it. Go ask her your-
self. I’m sure she’ll be happy to tell
you everything she knows,” I said sar-
castically, and then added, “I almost
want it to happen, just to see what
happens.”
“That’s true. I keep forgetting
about that, but just because we do one
illegal thing doesn’t mean we should do
two of them. It just ups the chance
that we’ll get caught. It’s why I want
to come with you, because as soon as I
don’t see a talking Cat, we’re out of
there. Agreed?”
“Agreed but think about this for a
minute. Is it really illegal to take
someone, if they want to go with you? I
really don’t see the illegal intent
here.”
“We’re stealing shit from the gov-
ernment, babe, I don’t think they’ll
care about intent,” Beth said, and then
added, “but you still make a good
point. Got anything else to back it
up?”
I smiled because debating legal
arguments with Beth was the only time I
ever won consistently with her.
“Let’s flip that whole legal
theory around and instead of asking if
we have the right, let’s ask if the
government has the right to hold a
person against their will, especially
if they don’t have a good reason?
