CHAPTER 2: MONDAY, OCTOBER 20th

Besides, sometimes in life, you’ve
got to take a chance on something, or
someone, because then if things go in
the crapper, you’ve got someone to
blame.
Ha, ha, just kidding about that
last part.
“Sure. Why not?” I told him, “but
first you have to swear on those bun-
nies’ souls.”
Johnson laughed but still did it.
“I’m taking a hell of a chance
here, but I think it’s worth it, and
hopefully you don’t blow it for me,” he
said after the swearing in, and then
lowered his voice even further.
“Ok. Here’s the scoop. There are
some guys at the station that don’t
give a shit about what you did. All
they talk about is how you almost kil-
led a bunch of people, and I think one
of them might even be the author of
that blog piece.
“I understand their logic, but I
love animals more, and one thing I also
know is that so does the DA.
“Right now, he’s blinded by what
you did before, and not what you did
after. That blog piece probably didn’t
help either.”
He paused and waved someone off
that I didn’t see, then turned back to
me, “I’m going to do something so dra-
matic, I don’t even want you to know
what it is. You just have to trust me
that it will definitely flip his mind.”
“I don’t know why, but I think
you’re one of the good guys, and be-
sides, you did the soul swearing thing.
If things go south, though, I’m blaming
everything on you. That’s part of the
deal, by the way.”
He laughed, “Ok, I’ll take all the
blame.”
“Ok then, let’s go.” I got up, and
we both walked over to the door that
opened into the Prosecutor’s outer of-
fice, where his secretary worked, the
one who called to invite me in.
Johnson held me back, “Hold it.
Let me go in first.”
He then waved to a guy who was
holding this huge German Shepard back.
The guy followed Johnson in and
had to literally drag that big-ass dog
into the office with him. It viciously
snarled and snapped at me, like it
wanted a piece of me right this fucking
minute. Not later, but right the fuck
now.
What the hell was I getting myself
into, I thought? This did not look good
at all.
