Shuffles was always so friendly, and
the way she was acting then, made me
believe at the time, that maybe she
really did maul that girl, until I
found out the truth.
“I hated myself for even thinking
that, and after we were done, one of
them told me, ‘Look where she bit me. I
think the way you guys do it is way too
humane. Someone should’ve beaten that
thing to death with a baseball bat
instead,’ and even laughed about it
with his buddies, and I laughed with
them.”
Beth started sobbing, but tried to
finish anyway, “She wasn’t being mean.
She was just trying to tell us that she
was innocent, but didn’t know how to do
it, and I didn’t care,” she said and
started sobbing uncontrollably.
* I’d never heard the last part of
that story before, and hugged her, “I
didn't know that, hon. I'm sorry.”
“It's not your fault,” she was
finally able to say, and then smiled.
“It's why Barry won't do another
one, but on the bright side, I guess,
it does help me to understand you a
little better, if nothing else, you
know?”
“Yeah, except you didn’t have a
choice. I did, and I deserve nothing
but evil happening to me, and you
definitely don't deserve that Beth.”
“Why are you so fucking hard on
yourself, Crim,” Beth said after giving
me a kiss, and then searched my face
for answers.
